Woman and the Window

Two women severely injured placed in the same hospital room. One person was allowed to sit up in her bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid. Her bed was near a window.

The other woman needs to spend all her time flat on his back. The person talked for hours. They talked about their spouses and families, their homes, their occupations, their inclusion in the military assistance, where they had been on holidays.

Every afternoon,  when the woman in the bed by the window could sit up, she used to pass the time by describing to her roommate all the things visible to her outside the window. The woman in another bed started to live for that one-hour timespan were her world would be increased and enlivened by the various activities and colors of the outside world.

From the window, a park is visible that has a beautiful lake. Geese, ducks, grebes, swans, etc. play in the water while kids sailed their paper boats.  Many couples walked arm in arm holding flowers of different color and a fine view of the city skyline could be visible for a long distance.

As the woman lay near the window described all this in the complete detail, the woman on the other side of the room would close her eyes and imagine the whole beautiful scene. One warm afternoon, the woman lay near the window described a parade crossing through.

Although the other woman was unable to hear the band, she could see it in her mind’s eye as the lady by the window portrayed it with very descriptive words. Days, weeks, and months started to pass.

One morning, the day nurse arrived at their room and brought water for their baths. she found the lifeless body of the woman by the window, who had died peacefully in her sleep. She was very saddened and called the hospital ward boys to take the body away.

As soon as it seemed appropriate, the other woman asked if she could be moved near to the window. The nurse said yes and shifted her and after making sure she was comfortable, she left her alone.

Slowly, painfully, she propped himself up on one elbow to take her first look at the real world outside. She started to slowly turn to look out for the window beside the bed. It faced a blank wall.

The woman asked the nurse what could have constrained her expired roommate who had depicted such magnificent things outside this window. The nurse said that the woman was visually impaired and could not even see the wall.

There is gigantic satisfaction in making others happy, regardless of our own circumstances.
Mutual pain is a large portion of the distress, yet joy, when shared, is multiplied.
