power of a smile story

There are many little towns in the Deccan plateau in south India. The fresh air, the greenery, and the hilly places are sources of abundant joy. Little urchins running around the market areas are a common sight. They are the children of laborers. They live in simple and tiny houses. When they plat together, their moments of happiness are reflected in their shining eyes.

Sundar and Supreet had come to their coffee estate to spend the summer vacation. They liked to romp around and hear stories from their grandfather. Grandfather was an old and feeble man. He used his walking stick for support. Every time the boys came for their holidays he had something exciting and new to tell them. When they return to Banglore for studies, he missed them a lot.

It so happened that after the grandsons left, grandfather missed them and took a walk down the lane to feel good. Seeing some urchins a little distance away he smiled and waved at them. The urchins smiled and waved back although they did not know him. This was the beginning of a new bond. This went on day after day whenever Grandfather went out, and the circle of urchins grew wider.

''Come here,'' said the old man to the little ones. Then take out some money from his wallet he asked a vendor, ''How much are these peanuts?''

Grandfather bought the nuts. He distributed to the boys and smiled at them. His smile brightened their lives. They held his hand, helped him to cross the street, and return home. They called him, 'Taata.'

After some days when Taata was walking down the street, his purse slipped and fell into a shallow pond. He was unaware of this but the little ones saw it falling.

Anil and Sunil called out, ''Taataji wait. Your purse fell into the water. We'll bring it out.

The boys were honest. They got into the muddy water and fetched the purse. Taata smiled and thanked them. He brought toffees and new clothes.

When Sundar and Supreet came for their holidays Grandfather told them about his purse and said, '' Don't forget the weak people.'' A smile blossomed into a bond of mutual help.

We learn from all experiences in life.
