You must have heard about the recent war between India and China where both sides have lost soldiers. The location is strategically important to both the countries and this war is about the Chinese intrusion on the no man’s land. So, what are the facts behind it? Which country’s stand is right? • In the war that broke out between two countries, 20 soldiers from the Indian side have lost their lives.
• It is not the first sign of war between these two countries. They have been in a major war in 1962 too.
• The year was 1959 when Nehru said in the Lok Sabha that there’s a land in eastern and north-eastern Ladakh where nothing grows. Well, after so many years, that very land is the main cause of this war in 2020.
• Ladakh serves as an important landmark, for both India and China. China’s interest in Ladakh is on the high side after its acquisition of Tibet in 1950.
• Like Bhutan and Sikkim, Ladakh was an independent state of the Himalaya till 1834. The China side of it was a part of the Tibetan empire.
• The Galwan Valley area holds a lot of importance for India for the fact that it provides a passage to the Aksai Chin, which is a disputed plateau that is controlled by China but is claimed by India. In the steep ridges of the valley, Indian soldiers are deployed.
• The border that runs through India and China is 4,056-km long.
• The conflict and war, which is taking place between the soldiers are at a freezing height of 14,000 feet. The area of war lies in the western Himalayas.
• According to the recent satellite images by the Earth-imaging company Planet Labs and obtained by Reuters, it can be seen that China is actively doing constructions in the valley with the possibility of building a dam in the Galwan valley river.
• There is also an indication of vehicles from both sides. While India has 30-40 vehicles, China has deployed more than 100.
• Galwan Valley is important for India as it leads to the 224km long Durbuk-Shyok-Daulat Beg Oldie road.
• The Siachen glacier is between the Karakoram Range, not very far from the Galwan Valley.
